Presented by Magda Szubanski, this video looks at three main centres for the development of appropriate technology products, ideas and attitudes - CERES in Melbourne, the Rainbow Power Company in Northern New South Wales and the Centre for Appropriate Technology in Alice Springs. The program deals with key areas such as design principles, renewable energy, recycling and waste disposal and the way people living in the cities can make a major contribution towards achieving sustainable lifestyles to protect the environment. This video is accompanied by a booklet of teacher support materials, which are provided in three sections - upper primary/junior secondary, junior secondary and junior secondary/post compulsory. These correspond to Band B, Band C and Band D respectively of the national curriculum document A Statement on Technology for Australian Schools. The materials include research activities, ideas for discussion and design briefs on topics such as energy efficiency, community needs etc.
