The second in the series, this video and accompanying workbook take students in the middle school years on an unforgettable journey to East Timor. In the video, we meet 16 year-old Augustino from East Timor and compare his life with 16 year-old Laurence in Australia.
Both boys are caught up in life threatening emergencies that force them to leave home. In East Timor, Augustino flees the militia and Indonesian army violence while in Australia, Laurence escapes the massive Shoalhaven Christmas bushfires. Do both boys make it home safely? Do their families and friends survive? How do their communities respond? What are their hopes for the future?
This positive resource introduces the nation of East Timor - its geography and history, its people, its culture and connections with Australia. It integrates a justice perspective across the curriculum and also looks at the question "Why do people around the world move?". The workbook provides a number of hands-on activities, discussion topics and research tasks that will engage students through a variety of learning styles.
