The Dam Truth: The Mekong River Basin

Resource Details: Community Aid Abroad-Oxfam Australia,
Australia, 2000, 12 minutes.

In Cambodia’s Stung Treng Province, Community Aid Aboard Oxfam Australia is working with local communities to help maintain their livelihoods and manage their natural resources for the future. However, local initiatives like fisheries management and food security programs could well be undermined by grandiose plans, which could see the river basin and its diverse environments fundamentally, changed. Under threat are the livelihoods and rights of the men and women whose lives are directly connected to the river. The Dam Truth explores the success stories of local villages working together to protect their resources. At the same time it looks at one of the major threats to their way of life, a threat that is central to the type of development being promoted in the Mekong region - the potential impacts of large-scale hydroelectric dams.
